There is no way we can thank you enough for making Hindu Nights what it is. This Saturday was without a doubt the culmination of 5 years of hard work to try ‘n make rock ‘n roll fashionable again. Job well done!! (Pictures online here !)

We do want to carry on for some time but exactly because of that we decided to cut down on the editions. From now on, there will only be 3 nights per year and all three of them will take place in Ghent. Never say never but we don’t see it happen again in other cities as Hindu is somehow too closely linked to the great venue of Vooruit, and because it never was about the money in the first place, we reckon this is how it should be! So next time round will be September!!

Just wanna say thanks to our friends Up In The Sky who are definitely supporting our night from above, to all who are or have been involved in the nights, DJs, bands, friends… But especially to all of you: for drinking, singing, laughing and for never causing any trouble.

Or, in the words of the Cherry Cola DJs: “We literally haven’t experienced anything on that level since Ibiza in 96.”

Has it been 5 years? Yes, it has and my brain hurts a lot.

It has been 5 years since my brother Michael & I attended our first Hindu Night at Make Up Club. I remember that first night quite clearly: Freaky Age did a storming live set, Paul Gallagher was DJ-ing, the music was great (‘Hand in Glove’ mixed with ‘I am The Resurrection’), the GT’s rocked & I was jealous as fuck. As your typical uni-pub-britpop-DJ I had played exactly the same music since ‘94, much to the liking of my six fellow Morrissey-obsessed barstools, but not with the audience and sheer hysteria I witnessed that October night in Ghent.

It has been 5 years since we decided that, if we can’t beat the Hindus, we might as well join them … and so we offered that Fred Perry fella with the cocky grin – which we correctly identified as the HN organizer – a beer. Three hours later, our five-year-journey & our on-going friendship began!

It has been 5 years since Mich & I started DJ-ing together as Gigolos in Retirement, mixing (Brit)pop & rock ‘n’ roll with sixties/seventies, glam, punk, wave, merseybeat, mod, soul, girl groups & French pop classics. Slightly alternative, never obscure.

It has also been 5 years since we did our first DJ set at Make Up Club. Entering the club in style of course, equipped with our CD’s neatly stacked in a (yes, really) closetdrawer (an anecdote that quickly became part of legendary Ghent nightlife folklore ) & a one-ear-headphone, Gigolos delivered – ànd raised a few hipster eyebrows – and were asked back to DJ at every Hindu Nights ever since.

We look back at 5 years of fun, with great memories of the long rock ‘n’ roll club nights at Make Up, the Lokerse Feesten mainstage sets, stage-dive sets at the Backdoor pub, organizing our own club nights “Icons” & our own personal highlight: DJ-ing before & after Morrissey last August. We want to thank Peter V (+ all at HN) & Peter D (from the hearts of our bottoms) for making this possible. We met some great people, experienced wild, wild nights (& days) and made friends for life.

Gigolos & King Kenny (aka Peter D – Lokerse Feesten) will celebrate all of this March 17th with a special, very compact one-hour DJ set comprising all their favourite DJ tracks from the last 5 years. So expect classic britpop, early punk & a lot of rock & roll & soul stompers.

Here’s to friendship, love, beers & quality guitar music!

I was listening to the Rock Rally tapes and so far Jane and the Wires – a band that started out only in October 2011 – really knocked me off my feet.

I gave them a call to join the line up on 17th March and they said yes.

So there you go, another name added to a very nice line up for a grand night out. Now let’s hope they get to the Rock Rally final.

But with the closing of the best club around since 1964 we had to look for another venue and in our mind there was only one place good enough: VOORUIT. However, we never thought we were gonna fill the place.

Now, 5 sold out nights later, we can say our dream has come true. Rock ‘n roll is fashionable again, has recovered its place on the party scene and without being arrogant we can now say that HiNDU NiGHTS GHENT is up there with LONDON’S KOKO and LIVERPOOL’S MOJO’S. And that’s what it was all about; it was never about being small, hip or cool – we wanted everybody to get in and have it!!

The original idea was to make rock ‘n roll fashionable again and having sold out Vooruit for the 4th consecutive time, the point has been made. So many kids were waiting for a top night out dancing to ‘She Loves You (Yea Yea Yea)’ and ‘I Bet That You Look Good on the Dancefloor’ and we can’t thank them enough for their support over the years, creating a magical atmosphere over and over again.

We wish you all a merry Christmas.

Remember that doors open at 11PM and that queues can be expected when you come a bit later.

As a sign of appreciation for the presale storm, ‘A boy Named Johnny’ has been added to the line-up. Because NY-eve is always a bit fake, we thought a Johnny Cash tribute band would be great (no seriously, they’re mega – and the idea that we want the girls to wear retro ball dresses was just an excuse).

So so so, good old-fashioned fifties and sixties rock ‘n roll and Northern Soul at the Café and banging indie tunes in the Ballroom.

A splendid time is guaranteed for all.
